Ranveer Singh Bhavnani is an Indian actor who appears in Hindi films. He is the recipient of several awards, including two Filmfare Awards, and is one of the highest-paid actors in the country. After graduating from Indiana University Bloomington, Singh returned to India to pursue his film career. He made his acting debut in 2010 with a lead role in Yash Raj Films' romantic comedy Band Baaja Baaraat. The film emerged as a critical and commercial success, earning him a Filmfare Award for Best Male First.

Singh was born on July 6, 1985 to a Sindhi family in Mumbai, Anju and Jagjit Singh Bhavnani. His grandparents, Sunder Singh Bhavnani and Chand Burke, moved to Mumbai from Karachi, Sindh, in present-day Pakistan, during the partition of India. He has an older sister named Ritika Bhavnani.Singh is the first cousin of actress Sonam Kapoor and producer Rhea Kapoor, the daughters of actor Anil Kapoor and his wife Sunita Kapoor.Singh explains that he gave up his last name Bhavnani because he thought the name would have been "too long, too many syllables", thus downplaying his mark as "salable commodity". . In January 2010, Singh was called for an audition by Shanoo Sharma, the head of the casting division for Yash Raj Films.They informed him that it was for a lead role in their film titled Baaja Baaraat Band, a romantic comedy in the world of wedding planning. Aditya Chopra, the company's vice president, later saw the videotape tapes and was impressed by Singh's game, and decided that it was the role of Bittoo Sharma, the movie's hero.

However, director Maneesh Sharma needed something more convincing and he was called to a few more auditions over the next two weeks until they were completely convinced of his caliber.After two weeks of testing, Singh was confirmed for the role of Bittoo, with Anushka Sharma playing the female lead.

Singh described Bittoo Sharma's role as a typical Delhi boy. To prepare for the role, he spent time with students on the campus of the University of Delhi.

Singh's next release was Lootera , a period novel written and directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, and starring Sonakshi Sinha. An adaptation of O. Henry's novel, The Last Leaf, Lootera has been critically acclaimed. Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN wrote that Singh "brings a silent sensitivity to Varun, and sometimes a blazing intensity, offering a finely internalized performance, it leaves a lasting impression." However, Lootera performed badly at the box office.

Singh with Deepika Padukone promoting Bajirao Mastani in 2015. His performance in the film established him in Hindi cinema and earned him the Best Actor award at Filmfare.Singh played the opposite role to Deepika Padukone in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, entitled Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, in which he played Ram, a Gujarati boy based on the character of Romeo.

Bhansali was impressed by Singh's performance in Band Baaja Baaraat and decided to screen him for the film. Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela has generated positive reviews from critics, as has Singh's performance.

In 2016, Singh starred in Befikre, Aditya Chopra's romantic comedy, opposite Vaani Kapoor. He played Dharam Gulati, a stand-up cartoon whose romantic connections with Kapoor's character led to a conflict between them. Located in Paris, Befikre marked the fourth project led by Chopra. Singh performed a nude scene for her, a rare occurrence in an Indian movie. Variety's Jay Weissberg found the film to be a "too energetic twist on the theme of old friends with benefits" and criticized Singh's "manic behavior". He underperformed at the box office.

After a year's absence, Singh portrays Alauddin Khilji, a ruthless Muslim king, in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat drama , starring Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor, who marks his third collaboration with Bhansali and Padukone. Right-wing Hindu groups speculated that the film distorted historical facts, and issued violent threats against the actors and the team.
