Career

Parekh began her career as a child artist under the pseudonym Baby Asha Parekh. The famous director Bimal Roy saw her dancing on stage and launched her at the age of ten in the film Maa (film of 1952), then repeated it in Baap Beti (1954). The failure of this last film disappointed her, and even if she did some other roles of children, she stopped to resume her studies . Eight days later, producer Subodh Mukherjee and screenwriter Nasir Hussain described her as a heroine in Dil Deke Dekho (1959) against Shammi Kapoor, making her a big star.

The film also led to a long and fruitful partnership with Hussain. He then made Parekh the heroine of six more of his films. Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai (1961), Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon (1963), Teesri Manzil (1966), Baharon Ke Sapne (1967), Pyar Ka Mausam (1969) and Caravan (1971). She also made an appearance in her film Manzil Manzil (1984). Hussain has also been involved in the distribution of films for 21 films, starting with Baharon Ke Sapne (1967) . Parekh was first known as a dancer and tomboy in most of her films, until director Raj Khosla gave her a serious image by placing her in tragic roles in three of her favorite films; Do Badan (1966), Chirag (1969) and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978). Director Shakti Samanta gave her more dramatic roles in her other favorite films, Pagla Kahin Ka (1970) and Kati Patang (1970); the latter earned him the award for best actress Filmfare. Many leading directors have launched it in several of their films, including Vijay Anand and Mohan Segal. Parekh played in his mother tongue performing three films in Gujarati at the peak of his fame in Hindi films, the first being Akhand Saubhagyavati (1963), which became a huge hit.
