Set in 1795, the film follows a band of Thugs led by Khudabaksh Azaad, who aspires to free Hindostan (the Indian subcontinent) from the rule of the expanding British East India Company. Alarmed, British commander John Clive sends a small-time Thug from Awadh, Firangi Mallah, to infiltrate and counter the threat.
Leader of the "thugs", Khudabaksh Azad [Played By Amitabh Bachchan] is the biggest threat to the East India Company and its chief officer, John Clive (Lloyd Owen). Unable to trace Khudabaksh and his team, the British force hires another small-time thug Firangi Mallah [Played By Aamir Khan] in order to give them information on the dangerous Khudabaksh, who seeks freedom for the country at any cost.
Firangi Mallah, who calls himself "mahaan kamina", is someone who has betrayal in his nature. He somehow wins the confidence of Azad and joins his team of thugs, only to get him into the trap of the British.
In the process, a lot of action and drama ensues, bringing in the characters of Zafira [Played By Fatima Sana Shaikh] and Suraiyya [Played By Katrina Kaif].
