Chitrangada Chahal was born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. His father, Colonel Niranjan Singh Chahal, is an officer of the Indian Army. His brother Digvijay Singh Chahal is a golfer. After graduating from Meerut at Sophia's Girls School, she completed her studies in Home Science (Food and Nutrition) at Lady Irwin College in New Delhi.She received formal training in Kathak.

Singh began her career as a model before moving to the big screen. After completing her university studies, she began modeling with brands such as ICICI Bank and Alukkas Jewelery, among others.

She caught the eye after playing in a Gulzar Sunset Point clip.A musical video of singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya followed. Subsequently, she made her debut with Sudhir Mishra's film Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi in 2003 . The role was widely praised: a Washington Post magazine noticed her for "giving her character a deep sense of dignity and decency".

She took a break to act from 2005 to 2008. In 2008, she returned with the lead role opposite Sanjay Suri in Onir's romantic comedy, Sorry Bhai! . His release during the Mumbai weekend was disastrous at the box office.
