Danny Denzongpa  is an Indian actor, singer and director. He has mainly worked in Bollywood films, although he has also appeared in several Nepalese, Tamil, Bengali and Telugu films. He has performed in about 190 Hindi films since 1971. In 2003, Denzongpa received the Padma Shree, the fourth highest civilian honor of India.  His film career spans more than 4 decades.

Denzongpa was born in a Buddhist family in Gangtok and comes from Bhutia and Nepalese descent. He was educated at Birla Vidya Mandir, Nainital, and then completed his college at St Joseph's College, Darjeeling, in 1964.  Denzongpa's love for horses and horse riding began very early, because his family practiced horse breeding. He is also a painter, a writer and a sculptor. He nurtured the ambition to join the Indian Army and won the prize for the best cadet in West Bengal and participated in the Republic Day parade.

Career

At the beginning of his film career, Danny practiced learning Hindi by talking to the ocean.He started with B.R. Zaroorat d'Ishara in 1971 , which was his first film. He got his major break in Mere Apne  of Gulzar, where he played a positive role. He had his first major negative role in B.R.Chopra's Dhundh , where he played the role of a crippled and frustrated husband, who showed his power to move. Danny, in the 1970s, was increasingly open to playing different roles, but chose to play a more positive role.

It is said that Danny was the first choice to play the iconic role of "Gabbar Singh" in the movie Sholay. However, since he had left for the filming of Feroz Khan's film Dharmatma, Gabbar's role was ultimately entrusted to Amjad Khan.

He starred and played a more positive role in critically acclaimed films in the 1970s, such as Chor Machaye Shor, 36 Ghante, Fakira, Sangram , Kalicharan, Kaala Sona and Devata. After his performance in the movie Devata, he began to play more important roles. It was simultaneously part of big budget films such as Aashiq Hoon Baharon Ka, Paapi, Bandish, The Burning Train and Chunoti in Negative Roles.

In the early 1980s, he had thought of leaving the cinema. He said in an interview, when asked why he decided to shoot a movie: "I remember that in the 80s I was so fed up with the movies I was doing, all the bad guys were a dacoit and I remember going to an actor named Tiwari was my acolytes and my lair was a cave with lanterns.

He played a dual role in Bulundi, however, most of Danny's subsequent films between 1981 and 1983 failed He was disappointed by the failure of his recently released film Abhi Toh Jee Ley, who had popular songs such as "Tu Laali Hai Saveriwali". As a result, Danny began accepting supporting roles, often playing a character older than his actual age. He played Kumar Gaurav's father-in-law in Love Story  and Mithun Chakraborty's father in Boxer
