Dharmendra MP is an Indian actor, producer and politician. In 1997, he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Hindi cinema.His main roles in action movies have earned him nicknames such as "Action King" and "He-Man". One of his most notable roles was in Sholay . After Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh, the third hero with the biggest films to his name, in the Hindi film industry is Dharmendra while the fourth and fifth are Jeetendra and Devanand. Dharmendra has given 107 blockbuster box office films in his career which is only second to Jeetendra who has delivered 113 box office hits.
Dharmendra was born Dharam Singh Deol in Nasrali, a village in the Ludhiana district, from Punjab to Kewal Kishan Singh and Satwant Kaur to a Jat family. His ancestral village is Dangon, near Pakhowal, Ludhiana. He spent his youth in the village of Sahnewal and studied at the Government High School in Lalton Kalan, Ludhiana, where his father was the director of the village school. He made his intermediary from Ramgarhia College, Phagwara in 1952. |

Career
Dharmendra won the Filmfare Magazine's New Talent Award and came to Mumbai from Punjab in search of work . He debuted with Arjun Hingorani's Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere in 1960. He had a supporting role in the movie Boy Friend in 1961, and was screened as the romantic interest in several movies between 1960-67.
He worked with Nutan in Soorat Aur Seerat , Bandini , Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya and Dulhan Ek Raat Ki and with Mala Sinha in Anpadh , Pooja Ke Phool . and Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi, with Nanda at Akashdeep, with Saira Banu in Shaadi and Ayee Milan Ki Bela and with Meena Kumari in Main Bhi Ladki Hoon , Kaajal , Purnima and Phool Aur Paththar .
He had a role as a solo hero in Phool Aur Patthar , which was his first action movie. It has long been speculated that Meena Kumari and Dharmendra had an intimate relationship in the 1960s. Meena Kumari greatly helped her to establish herself among the A-listers of the time . Phool Aur Paththar became the most profitable film of 1966 and Dharmendra received his first Filmfare nomination for Best Actor. His performance at Anupama was critically acclaimed He received a souvenir at the 14th National Film Awards in recognition of his performance in the film.
He played romantic roles in films like Aaye Ki Bela Milan, Aaya Sawan Jhoomke, Mother Dost Md Momm, Pyaar Hi Pyaar. He made suspense thrillers like Shikar, blackmail, Kab Kyun Aur Kahan, Keemat. He received a Best Actor Filmfare nomination for an Action Hero role in the 1971 blockbuster Mera Gaon Mera Desh Having played romantic and action pieces, he began to be called a versatile actor in 1975. His comic timing in comedy films such as Tum Haseen Main Jawan, Do Chor, Chupke Chupke, Dillagi and Naukar Biwi Ka were appreciated.
His most successful association was with Hema Malini, who became his wife. The couple played together in many films, including Raja Jani, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sharafat, Naya Zamana, Patthar Aur Payal, Tum Haseen Jawaan Main, Jugnu, Dost, Charas, Maa, Chacha Bhatija, Azaad and Sholay . His most notable performances include Satyakam with Hrishikesh Mukherjee, and Sholay, which is listed by Indiatimes as one of the "25 Best Bollywood Movies of All Time".
In 2005, the judges of the 50th edition of the Filmfare Awards presented Sholay with the special distinction of the best 50-year-old film. |
