Khan's first leading role was in Lekh Tandon's Dil Dariya television series, which began shooting in 1988, but production delays led to the 1989 Fauji series becoming its television debut instead. In the series, which portrays a realistic look at army cadet training, he plays the lead role of Abhimanyu Rai. This led to further appearances in Aziz Mirza's television series Circus and Mani Kaul's mini-series Idiot . Khan also played minor roles in soap operas Umeed and Wagle Ki Duniya ,as well as in the English television movie In Which Annie Gives It Ones . His appearances in these soap operas led critics to compare his look and style with those of actor Dilip Kumar, but Khan was not interested in cinema at the time, thinking he was not good enough. Khan's only exit in 1999 was Baadshah, in which he played in front of Twinkle Khanna. Although the film underperformed at the box office, it earned him a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Performance in a Comedy Role, which he lost to Govinda for Haseena Maan Jaayegi. Khan became a producer in 1999 in collaboration with actress Juhi Chawla and director Aziz Mirza for a production company called Dreamz Unlimited. After declining the role of Anil Kapoor in Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, Khan began filming My Name Is Khan, his fourth collaboration with director Karan Johar and his sixth with Kajol. The film is based on a true story and fits into the context of Islam's perceptions after 9/11. Khan plays Rizwan Khan, a Muslim suffering from Asperger's Syndrome who travels across America to meet the country's president, in a role that film specialist Stephen Teo sees as a "symbol of assertive rasa values." NRI identity in the Bollywood world.
