Vicky Kaushal is an Indian actor who works in Hindi films. Born to the director of the Sham Kaushal action, he continued his engineering studies at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology. During an industrial visit to a computer company, he realized that office work did not suit him and he began to aspire to a career in cinema. He briefly took an engineering job and started accompanying his father on film sets. He studied drama at Kishore's Namit Kapoor Academy and worked as an assistant director at Anurag Kashyap in the two-part detective film Gangs of Wasseypur (2012).

Kaushal described good memories of working with Kashyap, whom he regards as his mentor.He also began working on stage and had his first acting work in the production of Manav Kaul's Laal Pencil. In the movies, Kaushal played minor roles in Kashyap's Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana (2012) and Bombay Velvet (2015), and the experimental Geek Out (2013).

Kaushal played his first lead role in the independent drama Masaan (2015) directed by Neeraj Ghaywan. Kaushal and Ghaywan were the two assistants on Gangs of Wasseypur, and he was screened in the film after Rajkummar Rao's withdrawal.To play a young man of low socioeconomic class aspiring to a better life, Kaushal spent time in Benaras, where the film unfolds, and observed the mannerisms of local men. The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard segment at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where it won two awards, including the FIPRESCI Award.

He was first considered the male leader of the romantic comedy Love per Square Foot, the first original Netflix movie in India.Firstpost's Shweta Ramakrishan considered the chemistry between Kaushal and his co-star Angira Dhar as the highlight of the film. He then starred in Meghna Gulzar's spy thriller, Raazi (2018), based on Harinder Sikka's novel Calling Sehmat. Established during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, the film tells the true story of a young Indian woman from Kashmir (played by Alia Bhatt) who marries a Pakistani army officer (Kaushal) to spy on the Indian intelligence service.

He was drawn to the humanity he found in history and worked to convey both vulnerability and authoritarian strength in his character. The film appeared as one of the most profitable Hindi films starring a female protagonist and Meena Iyer of the Daily News and Analysis congratulated Kaushal for being "the right movie" for the character of Bhatt. His second Netflix production of the year was the anthology film Lust Stories. It consists of four short films dealing with female sexuality; Kaushal was seen in the Karan Johar segment as a newly married man who does not recognize the sexual dissatisfaction of his wife (played by Kiara Advani).

Kaushal's most successful release of 2018 came with Rajkumar Hirani's Sanju, a biopic of troubled actor Sanjay Dutt, who was portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor in the film. Kaushal played his best friend Kamli, a fictional amalgam of various real Dutt friends.
