Batra was born to Ravi Batra, an army colonel and Neelam Batra, a Miss India participant in 1971. She lived in Ludhiana with her extended family when she was young. At school, she was an athlete and raced 200 and 400 meters. She has a degree in economics from Fergusson College, Pune and an MBA in marketing from Symbiosis, Pune. She has two brothers. She became the third Miss Asia Pacific finalist in 1993, at the age of 18.

At a young age, she started modeling part time. She was best known for her advertising message on Liril soap.She was the first Indian face to be launched and to be the spokesperson for Head and Shoulders in India. She has participated in more than 250 modeling events and advertising campaigns. She became famous when she was crowned Miss India Asia-Pacific in 1993. She has become one of the best models in India. She has walked the ramp of more than 250 fashion shows in India and abroad . She is ambassador of Parag Sarees.

Batra has refused many offers to complete his studies before signing a contract with Virasat Film Studio. The first film she signed was Virasat in 1997, followed by another successful film, Bhai.One of his films, Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story, a historical epic, was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004.
