Sonu won the Miss India contest in 1985 and participated in Miss Universe 1985. She succeeded Juhi Chawla, Miss India 1984 and, after taking up her responsibilities, surrendered her crown to Mehr Jesia in 1986.

In 1988, she played in the movie Akarshan in many daring scenes [according to who?]. A kiss scene became very famous [according to who?]. That year, she won Filmfare's Best Supporting Actress award for Khoon Bhari Maang, along with Rekha and Kabir Bedi.From 1988 to 1990, she played Maharani Chitrangadha, mother of Babruvahana, in the television series Mahabharat.
